UCM debate loses 2-4 vs Edinburgh on social media's political influence

The Talking Mules came up short against Edinburgh University's Debate Society on March 12 at Edinburgh University's Teviot Square Union.

The teams debated whether or not social media's impact on politics does more harm than good.Throughout the debate, the team secured the two and the four rankings. According to the Montgomery Cup Tournament's debate format, the ranking puts the Talking Mules further behind in the overall Montgomery Cup.

Talking Mules debater Michael Hutton said a lot of questions went unanswered because it was a busy, back and forth debate.

"It's always hard to debate social media because we are the generation that really pioneered it, we really adopted it, so it's kind of hard to just be like "Oh, (it's) all the way bad," Hutton said

The Talking Mules are in Durham, England next, debating against Durham Union on March 14.

My First Day in Glasgow

by Kaitlin Brothers

The first day in Glasgow was a tough one. Everyone had jet lag, being six hours ahead! But besides that, it was incredible.I really loved the style and architecture of the buildings. It kind of reminded me of Hogwarts, witch I love! They are absolutely stunning.

The next thing I noticed was the people. Everyone is very nice here, even strangers on the street. One example is when we were at a tea shop, and I had a bought coffee I didn't like, the waitress asked me about it and offered me free tea! I have been blown away by the kindness of strangers here. It makes the UK feel very homey. It makes me want to live here!

A couple things we did were walking through parks, the Botanical Gardens, the Kelvin Bridge Museum, and ate dinner at Coopers. These places were absolutely beautiful, especially the Botanical Gardens, a place filled with huge plants of all variety. I really loved the history and art of the museum as well, and we even got to hear an organ-playing show! I feel like i'm sucking in a lot of culture!

Day one of Glasgow: perfect.

My Day in Stirling

by Kaitlin Brothers

Today in Stirling was, to me, my favorite thing about this UK trip so far. The experiences today were mind blowing. The incredible views, the rich history of the castle, the William Wallace monument, seeing the architecture of the castle, and walking in downtown Stirling.

My absolute favorite thing was the view over the William Wallace Monument. The beautiful green all across the land looks amazing with the hillsides behind it, and the lush river flowing through it. I could not believe my eyes. It was truly an incredible adventure I hope to go on again someday.
